Go Up, O Sinners!

For this article, you should first read 2 Kings 1.1 - 18.

1. Go Up.

Elijah hears a message from the Lord about Ahaziah. Something is very wrong here. Elijah was in no way spying on Ahaziah, yet he knew the situation well. The situation, that is, with regard to his soul. Like the whole of humanity, Ahaziah was a sinner in need of repentance. But it was worse even than that. Ahaziah was injured by an accident and it was likely to be fatal. Worse again, he was in a state of constant rebellion against God. This put him in a far worse state than anyone else. This state of rebellion against God manifested by his action in seeking a word from the devil himself. A terrible sin. So a word is given to Elijah and it was not a word of comfort.

2. Go Back.

Elijah meets with the King's messengers and sends them back with the word that God has given him first. And to be fair they did their duty, both to God and the King. Not only that but they were prevented from committing the sin that they would have done had Elijah not met them. They faithfully delivered the message in full, leaving nothing out.

4. Come Down.

Having received a word from the Lord, Elijah retired to a remote area in a mountain to be alone with God. What more was there for him to do? He had received a word from the Lord, met the King's messengers, passed on the word and told them what to do.

But he was interrupted by arrogant servants of the King who treated him with disdain. This was tantamount to contempt. The fire fell and consumed them and their arrogance. Perhaps they were the same people who Elijah had sent back to the King. Who knows? So also with the send battalion.

Then the third Captain renders to Elijah the respect truly due to men who truly are men of God. No fire from Heaven this time, only a gentle direction to come down and accompany these men.

Their safe arrival at the King's house not only shows that they were successful, but that they were safe. However, the message that Elijah gave to the King was the same message that he had first received, and given to the King's first messengers. Nothing was different. The king had not changed his mind, and neither had God! God had already shown that He had changed His mind with regard to the third Captain, because he had learned both respect and reverence and made that plain in the directions given to Elijah.

5. Go Up, O Sinners!

We must all learn the lesson learned by the third Captain. We all have our day to day business, and go about it in our own ways, but never heard the fate of those who go before us. Yet we merrily ignore all the warnings given to us and never seek mercy from God.

The situation of the world as a whole and ours as families and individuals is terrifying.

We must earnestly pray and seek the Lord and pray for mercy.

We must confess that we are Sinners.

We must call out and aske Jesus Christ to come into our hearts and be be our Personal Saviour.

We must find a Church where they preach the Gospel as the Word of God.
